EDM machine (EDM for short, full name Electrical Discharge Machining) is a kind of mechanical processing equipment, mainly used for EDM. It is widely used in the manufacture of various metal molds and mechanical equipment. It is a special processing method for removing conductive materials by using the electro-erosion effect generated by the pulse discharge between the two poles immersed in the working fluid, also known as electrical discharge machining or electro-erosion machining.

EDM is mainly used to process molds and parts with complex shapes of holes and cavities; process various conductive materials, such as cemented carbide and hardened steel, etc.; process deep and fine holes, special-shaped holes, deep grooves, narrow slits and Cutting thin slices, etc.; processing various forming tools, templates and thread ring gauges and other tools.

EDM mainly relies on the instantaneous high temperature and high heat generated by the pulsed discharge between the tool electrode and the workpiece to remove materials. The discharge trace formed by the removal of material is mainly determined by the pulse energy. The energy released by a single pulse discharge depends on the inter-electrode discharge voltage, discharge current and discharge duration (ie pulse width). Therefore, the electrical parameters that affect the surface roughness of EDM mainly include peak voltage, peak current and pulse width. Because the peak voltage does not change much under certain processing conditions, it usually takes a fixed value, so the surface roughness mainly depends on the peak current and pulse width.

1 Influence of peak current on surface roughness
When the pulse width is constant, as the peak current increases, the energy of a single pulse also increases, so that the surface roughness value increases. Therefore, in order to obtain a smaller surface roughness value, the peak current value should be minimized.

2 Influence of pulse width on surface roughness
When the peak current is constant, the pulse width is large, the energy of a single pulse is large, the discharge traces produced by discharge corrosion are large and deep, and the surface roughness is deteriorated. Therefore, when the peak current is constant, a smaller pulse width is usually selected to obtain better surface roughness.
