What is vertical machining center?

Vertical Machining Center (VMC): It is a highly automated CNC machine tool widely used in the mechanical processing field, especially suitable for high-precision machining of complex parts. Its core feature is that the spindle is perpendicular to the worktable, a structure that gives it distinct characteristics in machining operations and application scenarios.

Structure and Working Principle

1. Key Components

Spindle System: Vertically mounted, drives the tool to rotate for cutting. It can reach speeds of thousands or even tens of thousands of revolutions per minute (RPM) with high precision.

Worktable: Horizontally arranged for clamping workpieces, capable of moving along the X and Y axes (some models support rotation or multi-axis linkage).

CNC System (Computer Numerical Control): Controls the movement trajectory of each axis and cutting parameters (such as feed rate, cutting depth, etc.) through code programs to achieve automated machining.

Tool Magazine: Equipped with an Automatic Tool Changer (ATC), which can store dozens of tools and switch automatically during processing to improve efficiency.

2. Working Principle

The machining path is set through a computer program. The spindle drives the tool to rotate at high speed, while the worktable moves according to the instructions to complete various processes on the workpiece, such as milling, drilling, boring, and tapping.

It requires minimal manual intervention and can complete multi-sided machining in a single clamping. After one-time clamping, the workpiece can automatically and continuously undergo multiple processes, including milling, drilling, boring, slotting, expanding, reaming, and threading.

Suitable for multi-variety machining of medium and small complex parts such as box-type, plate-type, disc-type, and shell-type components.
